The Woolwich Murder: Why there is no debate regarding the death penalty

I seem to go through a range of emotions and conversations when I’m drinking. The emotions usually range anywhere between utter depression and complete delirium; it’s a wide scale. Conversation topics appear on an even wider scale; just yesterday for instance we were discussing the Woolwich murders until one of my friends decided the conversation was too dark and proceeded to discuss the cleavage of the girl on another table.
But before the boob banter, we were having a very serious discussion, with very different opinions. The argument was whether or not the death penalty should be brought back, an extremely sensitive and controversial topic, but a topic that is hot on the minds of many people since that stomach wrenching day in South London just a few weeks ago. There were many reasons for, including the lack of space in prisons, making examples of serious offenders in order to prevent future scenarios from happening etc. There were also arguments against, such as the possibility of false convictions, death being an easy way out, moving against society’s progress and so on.
This argument could go on for days, and there would rarely be a solution wherein everybody involved in the discussion comes to a rational agreement either way. At the end of the conversation, it came down to two for, and three against. I was one of the people against the death penalty, and it is for one simple reason. Forgetting my beliefs that no one has the right to murder, even if that person has murdered, I do not believe that any human being should have the right to take another’s life. Forgetting the possible economic benefits, forgetting every other factor, it comes down to one thing.
I would like to tell you a story.
Once Upon a Time, a mother gave birth to an innocent child. This child was born without philosophy or morals, and had only simple needs; water, food, shelter and love. The mother watched her child grow, she fed him when he was hungry, she cuddled him when he was sad, and taught him right and wrong, the best that any human being can. The child learned actions, he learned to make sounds and he learned how to smile and laugh.
The child grew, the child went to school and the child experienced friendships, love, happiness, sadness, bliss and disgust. He stayed close to his mother, but became independent; he developed his own beliefs, interpreted ideas in his own way and came to his own conclusions about right and wrong. Whether his interpretations were correct or not, his mother supported his right to free speech and opinion. Whether she liked it or not, he was growing up.
The child eventually became a man, a man with his own responsibilities, a man who was independent, looked after himself and remembered his childhood. The man would remember the woman who would cuddle him when he was sad, feed him when he was hungry and tried to teach him right from wrong the best that she could. The man developed extreme beliefs, he began making his own decisions on what he interpreted was right and wrong. The man became sucked into a cesspool of extremism and hatred; the man became an evil, horrid, vile beast that isn’t fit to suck the scum from the bottom of a festering swamp.
The man decapitated another human being, a human being with thoughts, emotions, who at one point was the same blank canvass. The man killed one of his own species, one of his own kind in the most brutal and barbarous way imaginable. The man even had the audacity to brag and justify what he had done, with the blood still thick on his hands. The man had become an evil product of an evil belief.
But he still had a mother; a mother who cared for him and a mother who loved him unconditionally. To that mother, he was still the blank canvass, he was still the ball of light that she brought into the world, and he was still her child. Now imagine that mother watching her child take someone’s life, and then watch another man kill her child because of it. Imagine you are that mother, or father. Could you watch your child die? Could you support an idea in which that is a possibility?
The man is evil. The man deserves to be punished and punished severely. The man deserves to spend the remainder of his life giving back to the community, giving back to the society whose laws he betrayed and the families whose lives he has affected forever. The man does not deserve to die. This man may be a despicable murderer, and just another scumbag to us, but think about what that man is to his mother.
If that man was your child, would you support the death penalty?

Thank you for reading.

Value Betting Odds- 08/05/2013

I've finished my degree. All that hard work is done and I now have a bit more free time on my hands. Over the past few weeks I have developed my gambling habits into an education (in-between assignments of course) and after a fair bit of success in my last blog concerning value odds, I thought I would keep it going. I'm not a professional gambler, I haven't been doing this for long, but I believe these games are showing great value tonight. All bets are done with Bet365.

Let's get to it shall we?

"Double"

Chelsea V Tottenham- Over 2.5 Goals
Celta Vigo V Atletico Madrid- Under 2.5 Goals

£10 Returns £28.93

Reason: The winner of this match will be in the Champions League next season in my opinion. I don't think either team will be content with a draw, and both teams have a habit of scoring plenty of goals. 82.4% of Tottenham's away matches this season have had over 2.5 goals, scoring in 94% of them. Bale is on fire and Tottenham are going to do all they can to push Chelsea all the way tonight. Chelsea on the other hand have only failed to score in 17.6% of their home games this season, and with everything to fight for, I can see this game having plenty of goals. Both teams are coming into this game off the back of 1-0 wins this weekend, and at odds of 8/11, this is good value.

My reasoning for the next game is mainly due to statistics, as I am not completely up to date with Spanish football. There have been only 3 goals in Atletico's last 4 away games, and Atletico haven't conceded in 6 away games. Celta Vigo concede a fair few goals, however I don't see this game being a huge challenge for Atletico, and I think they might just take their time and ensure an efficient performance rather than a dominant one. Under 2.5 goals at 8/11 is also very good value, and combining the two returns nearly 2/1!

"Double"

Atlanta V Juventus- Juventus Draw No Bet
Inter Milan V Lazio- Over 2.5 Goals

£10 Returns £27.56

Reason: The first bet is a no brainer. Juventus have been unstoppable in Serie A this season, and I don't believe today will be any different. Juventus are undefeated in 10 games and have had a brilliant season domestically. Atlanta on the other hand are distinctly average, they haven't won in their last 3 home games and that win was against lowly Pescara. The reason I would suggest a Draw No Bet is because Atlanta have a habit of drawing, and Juventus may relax as they have already won the league and so have nothing to play for.

The next game is a tad more dangerous, betting on over 2.5 goals in a defensive league can backfire, but I believe this game has the potential for goals. Inter Milan and Lazio will want to finish as high up the table as possible, and with only two points between them, this could be a good game. Lazio come off the back of a 6-0 win, and it wasn't long ago Inter had a 4-3 thriller with Atlanta so there is potential here. This is probably the most dangerous bet, so feel free to replace them with another team if you are not confident.

These are the bets I have on for tonight, so I'll see how successful I am tonight!

Best of luck to everyone and thank you for reading,

Value Premier League Football Betting Tips- 20th April 2013

It's been a busy few months for me, with deadlines looming it's been difficult to do anything for myself other than playing FIFA and getting wasted. As satisfying as it was taking Barnet from League 2 to the Premier League title in 4 seasons, and as happy as I am that I've all but completed my dissertation whilst over the legal driving limit, it's nice to be writing for leisure again.

Recently, I have been trying my hand at football betting, and whilst I am still a relative novice in terms of experience, and indeed, judgement, I thought it would be interesting to see how I get on predicting matches and finding the best value. Please note at this stage that I am doing this as an experiment, and if anyone actually reads this, probably shouldn't take these tips as gospel. There are plenty of free tipsters on Twitter and Facebook that are professionals and really know their stuff, their win percentages are high and they always seem to be in profit (Gotta love free publicity).

Anyway, without further adieu, here are what I would consider my value selections for this weekend's Premier League games. All bets are made with Bet365. Check odds against Oddschecker.com for the best deals and returns.

Norwich/Reading- Under 2.5 Goals- £10.00 Stake- £20.00 Return- +1.00 Profit

Reason: 62.5% of Norwich's home matches this season have been under 2.5 goals, including two 0-0 draws in their previous 4 home matches. Norwich have won only 1 of their last 8 games, with Reading standing at 0 wins from the last 8 matches. Whilst Reading are a shoe-in to go down, Norwich can still survive. Norwich will want to win, but will be weary of a Reading team who are still clinging on for dear life. I can't realistically see anything past Under 2.5 goals, and at evens odds, this for me, is very good value for money.

West Ham- -0.5 Asian Handicap- £10.00- £21.50 Return- +1.15 Profit

Reason: Despite Wigan's reputation as the Relegation Battle's answer to Houdini, I simply do not see them getting a result at Upton Park. West Ham have had three difficult matches recently and picked up draws in all three of them, whilst being desperately unlucky to not pick up a win against Manchester United mid-week. Carroll and Diame are both on good form, and I think if they play well, the Hammers could get a very solid 2+ goal win. Wigan on the other hand haven't had a bad run, with only 3 losses in their last 8 (V Man City, Chelsea and Liverpool), but with the FA Cup Final looming, Martinez will have squad rotation on his mind and I believe this is the perfect opportunity for West Ham to take advantage and seal their Premier League safety, and possibly a Top 10 finish. At just over evens, this is also a very good value bet that only requires a +1 goal West Ham win.

The following bets are other bets I consider good value, but that I am less confident about.

Manchester United- YES Clean Sheet- £10.00-£21.00- +1.10 Profit

Manchester United- -2 Asian Handicap- £10.00- £22.00 Return- + 1.20 Profit

I would not recommend both of these bets on at the same time, but I think that Villa are the most likely team outside of the bottom 3 to go down. Manchester United are formidable at home, and I do not see them conceding against a young Aston Villa side that have been extremely poor this season. United will want to increase the gap on Man City (especially if City get a result at Spurs on Sunday) after what happened last season. Although I don't see United slipping up, Fergie will want a strong, dominating performance. I see a 3+ goal win for United as a very realistic possibility, and at just over evens, is once again good value.

Tottenham/City- Over 2.5 Goals- £10.00 - £19.00 Return- +0.90 Profit

Bale to Score Any Time- £10.00- £24.00 Return- + 1.40 Profit

10 years ago, this game would have been nothing more than a dull mid-table affair, today it's one of the biggest fixtures of the season. City go into this game wanting to keep the Premier League title race alive, even though many must already believe it is out of their grasp. Tottenham on the other hand, have to keep the pressure on Arsenal who dropped two points mid-week, and can take advantage of that with a big home win against City, who have an FA Cup Final (their only chance at silverware left this season) to focus on. I see this game being a 2:1 win for either team, it's too close to call, but I can't see either team not going for the win in this one. With Over 2.5 goals being a very realistic outcome, just under evens is good value.

The second bet would purely depend on whether Bale is fit, or AVB is just throwing up a smokescreen for Mancini's boys. My reasoning for this is that Bale loves the big games, and is extremely capable of scoring fantastic goals as we have seen this season. If Bale is fit, I wouldn't put it past him scoring in this one. He's already scored against United,Arsenal, Liverpool, West Ham and Inter this season, I'm sure he'd love to add City to that list.

The final games that I will post will not have any explanation, I have researched them, but it is 00:15 and I want to go to sleep. These are games I am less confident about, but aren't bad shouts if you fancy a punt.

Manchester United- Over 3.5 Team Goals- £10.00- £35.00 Return- +2.50 Profit

Liverpool/Chelsea- Over 3.5 Goals- £10.00-£26.20 Return- +1.62 Profit

Chelsea- Draw No Bet- £10.00- £25.00 Return- +1.50 Profit

West Ham/Wigan- 2nd Half Most Goals- £10.00- £20.50 Return- +1.05 Profit

Sunderland- Draw No Bet- £10.00- £23.70 Return- +1.37 Profit

Swansea- Win by 1 Goal- £10.00- £40.00 Return- +3.00 Profit

Stoke- Draw No Bet- £10.00- £23.70 Return- +1.37 Profit

Thank you for reading, hopefully I'll get back to my regular blogs soon, once everything is handed in. That will be the 8th of May, but I will try to get a few more posted before then if I can.

All the best everybody, and thank you for reading!

Chelsea V Arsenal (Review)

Arsenal's positive away record, combined with Chelsea's poor run of home games created plenty of anticipation for today's game. With Arsenal desperate for a big win and Chelsea in need of resurgence, there was bound to be a lot of talking points. Arsenal were without Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Mikel Arteta, Lukasz Podolski and Gervinho for today's game, leaving them with a lack of bite in attack. Chelsea on the other hand were without their skipper John Terry, Romeu, Victor Moses and John Obi Mikel.

It was yet another slow start that cost Arsenal a result in the Premier League this season. Chelsea needed a good start after their poor run of home games and got it when Juan Mata put the Blues ahead within 6 minutes, following a Giroud strike at the other end that should have put Arsenal 1-0 up. Things went from bad to worse for Arsenal, their weaknesses in defence was exposed again when Backary Sagna was caught out of position, leaving Szczesny to stick a food out and foul Ramires. The resulting penalty was buried by Frank Lampard, who proved once again that he still has a lot to offer the European Champions.

2-0 within 16 minutes.

For the rest of the first half Chelsea continued to dominate. The attacking force of Mata, Hazard, Ramires, Lampard and Torres tested Arsenal time and time again, their major fault being their inability to finish their chances, with Torres putting the ball into row z once again this season. There were only few chances from Arsenal, a 20 yard strike from Santi Cazorla was saved by Petr Cech, and a fantastic pass from Jack Wilshere nearly allowed Giroud to get a goal back.

Despite those chances, the half still ended with Chelsea in complete control.

The second half was a lot brighter from Arsenal. They looked like a different team, a team capable of challenging the top teams in the league, a team they should have looked like from the start. Wenger's half-time words worked, as Theo Walcott buried the ball expertly after a fantastic pass from Cazorla to get a goal back for the gunners. A goal reminiscent of the great Thierry Henry (who has been training with Arsenal for the past few weeks). Arsenal were buzzing. The stadium was alive with noise from both sets of fans as Arsenal constantly bombarded Chelsea with attack after attack. Chelsea still managed to break, but Vermaelen was a brick wall Arsenal desperately needed. Mertesacker's continued poor form meant the Belgian had to work a double shift to keep Chelsea out.

Despite Arsenal's continued dominance, it was Chelsea who had the best chance of the second half. Demba Ba escaped a poor attempt for an offside trap from Per Mertesacker to take the ball around Szczesney, only for Thomas Vermaelen to save the day again  with a fantastically angled block. Arsenal drew even more hope from this and moved forward yet again. Chelsea managed to hold them off, despite a stoppage time free-kick, several corners and a Giroud header.

It was a game of two halves, the first belonging to Chelsea, the second to Arsenal, however it was Arsenal's weakness at the back and lack of quality finishing up front that cost them a point in today's game. Chelsea have ended their poor run of games at Stamford Bridge and look forward to chasing Manchester City and Manchester United (who play Spurs later today). Arsenal on the other hand need Wenger to spend big in the transfer market, a proven striker and a strong centre-back are essential, with a defensive midfielder also a possibility.

The next two weeks are vital for Arsenal in determining whether they will be in the Champions League next season. Improvements are needed, and they are needed fast.

Player Ratings:

GK: Szczesney- 5

Made a couple of good saves throughout the game, and couldn't do much about the penalty, but it was that incident and his weak hand to Mata's goal that contributed to his low rating.

RB: Sagna- 5

It was a performance that was unlike Sagna. Caught out of position which lead to Chelsea's penalty, and was also at fault for letting Mata get so much space for the first goal. His performance picked up in the second half, but it wasn't enough to save him in the end.

LB: Gibbs- 7

Constantly getting forward and is becoming more and more influential in Arsenal's play as the season goes on. Made a vital tackle in the second half, but also got caught out of position a few times leaving Vermaelen to cover for him.

CB: Mertesacker- 5

Not a disastrous performance, and he has had worse. A positive shot in the second half was his best moment. He let Demba Ba escape down the wing which nearly got Chelsea a 3rd goal. He is slow, clunky and for someone who is 6'7, weak in the air. Sell him, please!

CB: Vermaelen (C)- 9

Our rock at the back. Put in a fantastic shift at the back today and didn't stop working. Halting attacks from Ba and Ramires as well as throwing the tackles in when needed, he also held off when they were not. An excellent captain's performance.

CM: Coquelin- 7

Was unlucky that Ramires' foul on him lead to the goal, he didn't look the same after that and was substituted for Aaron Ramsey in the second half. Played well and won the ball back a few times, but still isn't Arsenal's answer to a defensive midfielder.

CM: Diaby- 6

Did well spreading the play and was a big presence in Arsenal's midfield when they went on the attack, something Arsenal have missed in recent years. He got out of jail after nearly giving away a penalty in the opening of the game though.

CM: Wilshere- 8

Another tenacious performance from Arsenal's terrier. This guy does not stop working, a classic box-to-box midfielder. He played some great passes today, and Giroud can definitely not complain about the service he got. Wilshere is going to be a HUGE player in Arsenal's future, and they are lucky to have him tied down to a long term contract.

RW: Walcott-7

He spent most of the first half offside, but his pace was always going to be dangerous. The finish for Arsenal's goal was fantastic and you can tell his has been working on it. Should not have been playing on the wing today, but still managed to get himself on the scoresheet.

LW: Cazorla-8

Set up Arsenal's goal and looked agile and positive throughout the game. Gives Arsenal an extra dimension, but again should not be playing on the wing. I'd have rather seen Arshavin in for Coquelin to allow Cazorla and Wilshere the run of the midfield. Despite this, he had a very good game once again.

FC: Giroud-6

Missed three chances that could have made the difference. If he had buried his first shot (which he should have) the game could have been a lot different. Coupled with another chance right at the death that he also should have directed at goal, it wasn't the best day for Olivier.

Overall team performance: 7

The first half was dire, but the second half picked up and Arsenal showed what they are capable of. Although they looked weak, their poor performance in the first half was down to a complete drain of confidence. Although this was reinstated in the second half, it wasn't enough to get them a point.

Arsenal's MOTM: Thomas Vermaelen

Arsenal Vs Manchester City (Preview)

It's been a difficult year for both sets of fans in this Super Sunday game.

Manchester City haven't quite clicked into gear this season after Aguerooooooooo's goal in May. Arsenal on the other hand have hit the inconsistency that their fans (including myself) are now used to. Ten years ago this fixture looked a lot different. It wouldn't have been a favourite for a Super Sunday game for a start, and in terms of league position, the roles would have almost certainly been reversed.

Arsenal started well defensively this season, but through all their battling looked noticeably week at the back. Arsenal fans have been calling for some stability there with Mertesacker making far too many mistakes and the lack of an anchorman in midfield after the departure of Alex Song, but with Abou Diaby back in the fold Wenger will no doubt use that as a reason not to sign a replacement. Despite their free scoring prowess in recent games against Reading and Newcastle, City have conceded the least amount of goals in the league of any team this season (19) yet haven't managed a goal at the Emirates in the previous 5 games.

Manchester City have had their problems too this season, with Robin Van Per- I mean Manchester United sitting comfortably at the top of the league, United's 'little brother' have been trying to nurse the hangover from last season's success. Roberto Mancini's unrelenting desire to prove that Mario Balotelli isn't a complete liability would have backfired a lot more than it has without Eden Dzeko's contributions. Being 7 points behind United, Mancini has to start going with proven results in Dzeko,Tevez and Aguero (when he returns from injury) rather than possible potential. Although after this...

...I don't think it will be too long before it's one less thing Mancini has to worry about. I'll be shocked if Mario isn't out the door by February.

So after all of their respective problems this season. Where do we stand?

Well Manchester City are without Aguero, Nasri, Yaya Toure and Kolo Toure .

Whilst Arsenal will have to play without Olivier Giroud, but other injuries seem to have cleared up, with Diaby expected to make his return. However, don't expect anything more than a substitute appearance from the big Frenchman.

This game is likely to produce more tense moments than spectacular ones, and with City's injuries and Arsenal's inconsistency, I would say a cautious approach from both teams would be expected. In saying that, football is a funny old game and as we have seen with Bradford City beating Villa, Arsenal and Wigan, and City's unbelievable comeback against QPR to win the league last season. We should know by now that anything can happen.

There is something in the air today, an air that suggests fireworks are on the horizon. I may be wrong, but this could well be a blockbuster. With both teams needing points for different reasons, this could well be an attacking, free-flowing game between two very big football clubs.

My Prediction: Arsenal 2-2 Manchester City

Welcome! A Brief Guide to Writing On The Open Road's Blog

Welcome!

I've given Blogging a few tries over the past few years and for one reason of another I have always abandoned it soon after starting. Whether it was a lack of confidence or just sheer laziness, I never made a go of it. So here I am again, starting completely from scratch. What makes this time different? What makes this Blog the one that I stick with?

Well it's simple.

I'd never been passionate about anything in my previous Blogs. They were always off the cuff rants and after thinking about it, I just didn't care about what I was writing. What makes this Blog different is that I know what I am passionate about, and I know what I enjoy writing about. So what can you look forward to from this Blog?

Here is a brief list:

  • Football analysis, discussion and opinion.
  • Short stories, poems and novellas.
  • Articles and debates.
  • Travel updates and blogging about my adventures abroad.
Hell, I might even add a few more as time goes by. Please feel free to comment, link me to content and even e-mail me if you feel you have an issue you think should be discussed.

Thank you for previewing my Blog. I will add new content as and when I can, but for now I wish you well and look forward to meeting new people and sharing my stories with you.
